Biographical note

Author of various articles and book chapters on sociolinguistics, creole studies and foreign language teaching, Patrick-André Mather has conducted fieldwork in Moselle (France), where he studied French-German language contact, and more recently in New York City where he is investigating the acquisition of English phonetics and phonology by Puerto Rican and Dominican migrants. Dr. Mather has presented the results of his sociophonetics research at various venues, including the Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society (CUNY Graduate Center, March 2010 and May 2011), the 18th Sociolinguistics Symposium (University of Southampton, UK, September 2010), New Ways of Analyzing Variation (NWAV - San Antonio, TX, November 2010), and the Annual Meeting of the American Dialect Society (Pittsburgh, January 2011). In addition to his research interests, Patrick-André Mather was Chair of the Graduate Program in Linguistics at the University of Puerto Rico (Rio Piedras) from 2006 to 2009 where he organized the first International Conference on the Teaching of French as a Foreign Language in February 2009 (in collaboration with the Alliance Française), and the Hispanic Linguistics Symposium (HLS09) in October 2009. In 2009-2010, he was a Visiting Scholar at New York University's Department of Linguistics. Dr Mather is also a certified translator and teaches French, Sociolinguistics and Quebec Literature at the University of Puerto Rico, where he is an Associate Professor.

Linguiste, enseignant, traducteur et auteur de nombreux articles et chapitres sur la sociolinguistique, la créolistique et l'acquisition des langues étrangères (voir l'onglet Publications), Patrick-André Mather a mené une étude sociolinguistique en Moselle (France) sur les contacts entre le français et l'allemand, et plus récemment à New-York où il étudie l'acquisition de la phonétique et de la phonologie de l'anglais par la communauté portoricaine. Il a présenté les résultats de ses travaux en sociophonétique dans plusieurs colloques internationaux, notamment à l'Institut de recherches sur la langue en milieu urbain (RISLUS, CUNY Graduate Center, en mars 2010 et en mai 2011), au 18e Sociolinguistics Symposium à l'Université de Southampton (Royaume-Uni, septembre 2010) et au congrès annuel de la American Dialect Society (Pittsburgh, janvier 2011). Outre ses projets de recherche, M. Mather a dirigé le programme de Mastère en linguistique à l'Université de Porto Rico de 2006 à 2009. En collaboration avec l'Alliance Française, il y a organisé le premier Colloque international sur l'enseignement du français langue étrangère dans la Caraïbe en février 2009, ainsi que le Hispanic Linguistics Symposium en octobre de la même année. En 2009-2010, il était chercheur invité au Département de Linguistique de la New York University. M. Mather est aussi traducteur agréé et enseigne le français, la sociolinguistique et la littérature québécoise à l'Université de Porto Rico, où il est professeur permanent.
